Why you need more than maps and blueprints to achieve your business goals

Are you interested in achieving your business goals?

What else could you possibly need once you have the right map or blueprint?

Let me explain …

I had a interesting experience recently that gave me pause about some of the approaches and growth strategies small business owners are adopting these days.

I had a map in my hand somewhere in Central London and I was still lost!

I was headed in the opposite direction and didn’t even know it. After a few minutes happily following my map, it dawned on me that I might be headed in the wrong direction.  How could it be? I had checked the directions online, and even printed out a copy for the road.

Finally, once the fear of being late for my meeting set in, common sense prevailed and I asked a passer by for help.  Immediately I got the help and redirection, I managed to arrive at my destination in good time for my meeting.

That whole experience just reminded me of how much emphasis business owners sometimes place on having the right blueprint and maps in business when what we actually need in addition to the map is someone to redirect us if we vie off course.

Don’t get me wrong maps and blueprints are a great tool for accessing the experiences and advice of people we could otherwise not be able to connect with. What if you could get face to face, hands on help in-addition to their blueprints would that not make a huge difference?

The other insight I got from this experience is that if I had no pressing deadline i.e. meeting scheduled for a set time, I would not have been inclined to ask for help! I would have carried on oblivious to just how lost I was and how much further away I was moving from my destination!

Scary stuff, if you ask me.

Could this be you? Oblivious that you are headed in the wrong direction because you think you are following a map!

In my business, I have tried not to get too focused on the maps and blueprints. I prefer to invest in building relationships with the people who write the maps and blueprints so that I can access their handson support when I need it the most.

Great post Griselda,

I think many of us are or have been “lost” without even realising it at the time. I always encourage people to stop and reflect for a while and ask themselves “am I heading in the right direction?” Its much easier to take action when you’re just a little lost rather than totally lost :)
